As a freelancer, how do you find clients and sell yourself?
laura
33:11
To add to Kimi’s question — how did you get started as freelancer/project-based work? What was your first project?
Josh Wayne
33:48
Great questions, Kimi and Laura! I’ll answer both of those together :)
Meg H
36:18
I am just starting out and took a UX class and have one project currently. Can you start applying for jobs with just one project? And how do you best suggest finding UX projects to build my portfolio?
Hannah GA (she/her)
37:20
I LOVE THAT - no one is going to be benefiting from your burnout!
Esdras Jean Pierre (She/Her)
38:46
How can a UX Designer that’s looking for work find real client projects they can add in their portfolio (volunteer, pro-bono, etc)?
Hannah Huang
43:40
Can you recommend some UX books you found helpful?
Robin
43:57
What’s the best advice you can give to help a new UX Designer get through the design round of the hiring process?
Josh Wayne
44:19
Oh I have tons of book recommendations :)
pabloalaejosperez

Universal Principles of Design is a good one

I always recommend the classics - Hooked, Sprint, Lean UX, The Paradox of Choice
Jordan Davidovitz
50:08
What obstacles might exist for someone switching careers into UX / product design from an unrelated field, and does age matter? Curious if an entry level designer in their 30s will face different hiring challenges than someone fresh out of college, for example. Thanks!!

Creating a portfolio website seems a bit daunting and I am not sure where to begin as I haven’t done one before. Do you have any tips on how to create a portfolio website, initial steps and how to make it less overwhelming of a task?
Klew Still (she/her)

So I am just getting into marketing, working with small non profits and small businesses. When I started I was mostly working with already made websites, but I want to be more in depth with how to build a website specifically for m customers. Should I take the UX program offered by Google?
Hannah GA (she/her)
55:07
HAHAHAHA

mimi
57:35
yes we need another couple hours :)
laura
57:57
Too add (about a decade) to Jordan’s question — what about starting out in UX-related work with 15+ years experience?
RD
59:44
Great question - How did you find organizations to do those initial portfolio projects?
Josh Wayne
01:00:03
@Laura, the great thing about UX design is that you’re working in a lot of different industries. Experience in other industries means you understand the problems in that industry and transition in that industry
RD
01:00:32
And was it by internship or volunteering?
Klew Still (she/her)
01:00:49
I did a lot of my early portfolio work through school
pabloalaejosperez
01:01:47
Yes, internship and volunteering are good. But set a timeframe there
Klew Still (she/her)
01:02:09
That’s a great advice! I did some work for a non-profit professional org called INCOSE and they were starting almost from 0
Jordan Davidovitz
01:02:31
Thanks, Josh!

How is the market for Junior UX designers in Canada/Toronto?
Anissia Harris
01:03:45
Are there opportunities to work part time in UX design?
Lisa iselin
01:06:43
Hi everyone! I have a 10+ year background in graphic design and have spent a year in UI/UX training. Not a lot of experience in interactive web or mobile outside of training though. I'm terrified of not having enough on-the-job experience with UX/UI and either get too honest or freeze up in interviews. Any suggestions on getting over that horribly frustrating hump?
Josh Wayne
01:08:18
@Lisa, I had horrible stage fright when I started out. The biggest thing I recommend is practicing presenting your work. Think about all the questions you’re scared of getting and plan out your answer. Practice practice practice
RD
01:08:30
How do you all research besides online searches?
Josh Wayne
01:10:31
@RD, There’s tons of types of research. User interviews, card sorting, etc
Lisa iselin
01:10:41
Thanks Josh! I’ll plan to hammer myself, friend, family listening to me rehearse.
